Introduction - Independence Day

15th August is celebrated throughout India with zeal and zest. This day is observed to pay homage to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of India from the British reign. 

All educational institutions, government associations, and private institutions observe this day to honor the sacrifices of the freedom fighters. The Prime Minister of India also celebrates this day with great enthusiasm and respect. The Prime Minister also hoists the National flag to celebrate the day. After hoisting the flag, he addresses the nation via Doordarshan on Television. 

History of Independence Day 

15 August is celebrated as Independence Day throughout the whole of India. It is celebrated to mark the end of British rule that lasted for almost 200 years and the establishment of a free and new India. It is the same day when the sub-continent was partitioned into two countries namely India and Pakistan. However, India and Pakistan celebrate their Independence Days on different dates. In Pakistan, Independence day is observed on the 14th of August while we Indians celebrate our Independence Day on the 14th of August.

Britishers ruled India for about 200 years. The life of everyone under the reign of the British was terrible and dismal. There were no facilities at all. Heavy taxes were imposed on farmers and these gruesome tactics of the Britishers made the lives of every Indian miserable and sorrowful. The then-Indian rulers were singing the appraisal songs of Britishers. They were their puppets who never cared about the misery and cruelty that the Indians were going through. Furthermore, anyone who used to raise their voice against the cruelty was dealt with strictly by the British. 

How Did India Achieve Independence?

India achieved freedom from British colonialism in the year 1947. It was a long struggle of great freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the cause. Mahatma Gandhi, one of the great and influential leaders, joined the movement in 1914 and fought for the same. He used many non-violent (also known as Satyagraha) tactics to fight against the British reign. He believed that Non-Violent methods are more effective than violence. He started many non-violent movements to fight the reign like Non-Co-operation Movement, The Civil Disobedience Movement, Khilafat Agitation, Champaran Satyagraha, Quit India Movement, etc.

The other freedom fighters who dedicated their whole lives to Indian Freedom are Bhagat Singh, Mahadev Verma, Subhash Chandra Bose, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Rani of Jhansi, and Ram Prasad Bismil, Sarojini Naidu, Bhimrao Ambedkar, etc. Without these fighters, we would have not achieved freedom. These men and women fought fearlessly without caring about their lives. Many of them sacrificed their lives during the fighting for the same.  To honor these freedom fighters, this day, Independence day, is celebrated. They will be remembered forever for their contributions.

Independence is very important to remember the sacrifices of Indian Freedom Fighters. It is also very significant to unite the whole nation under one flag. This day is a symbol of unity, freedom, selflessness, and independence. It promotes brotherhood and love throughout the whole of India. It makes us realize that we are one irrespective of our caste, creed, or religion. Furthermore, it promotes unity in diversity which is very essential for living a happy life in a big country like India. It makes us proud of our history. It tells us that we should protect our culture and traditions. We feel very proud to be the citizens of a country that is the largest Democracy in the world.

Though women are not highlighted in history, countless women actively participated in the Independence movement of India. The history of the Indian Freedom Movement will be incomplete without mentioning them.
