National Youth Day History

National Youth Day is celebrated on 12 January every year across India. It is also known as Vivekananda Jayanti or Yuva Diwas. National Youth Day is the birthday of the great philosopher and Hindu monk "Swami Vivekananda". The Government of India declared this day as National Youth Day in the year 1984. Since then this day is observed as National Youth Day in India.

National Youth Day is celebrated all over the country with great respect and admiration. On this day, different speech, Youth Convention, Presentation, Essay-Writing, Seminar, and Painting competitions are conducted in India at Schools, Colleges and Universities.

National Youth Day spreads knowledge and awareness among the people regarding their rights and obligations. This day is celebrated to make the youth aware of the teachings and philosophy of Swami Vivekananda. The main idea behind celebrating National Youth Day, is to motivate the youths for making good contributions for a better future for the nation.

Swami Vivekananda was born on 12 January, 1863 in Calcutta (Now Kolkata). Narendra Nath was his actual name. His father's name was Vishwanath Datta, who has served as an attorney at the Calcutta High Court. Bhuvaneswari Devi was his mother, was a housewife.

Swami Vivekananda was a Hindu monk who believed in youth power. He was of the view that the future of the nation and the world can be improved if its citizens are unselfish, true, kind and generous. The monk, Swami Vivekananda, worked very avidly for the upliftment and empowerment of the youth. 

Teachings and Philosophies of Swami Vivekananda

The teachings of the great philosopher (Swami Vivekananda) are not limited only to India but are practiced and preached all across the world. 

Some famous teachings of Swami Vivekananda are as under:

  • Swami Vivekananda believed that if one wants to serve the God, he can serve Him by serving the people around him.
  • According to him; three things make every person great; Goodness, Absence of Jealousy and Helping Nature.
  • Everyone is equal regardless of religion, caste, creed and gender.
  • Swami Vivekananda believed that if anyone wants to change the world, he must have to believe in himself first.
  • He also taught us about; How struggle makes a man great. He says; If anything comes to you easily, you will never reach your maximum potential. It's the struggle which crafts a man perfectly and brings best out of him.
  • Swami Vivekananda also stressed on being empathetic towards our fellow beings. He believed that if we practice the principle of empathy, the world also would be kinder towards us.
